Social Responsibility
Sodexo is committed to improving the quality of daily life for people, whenever and wherever they come together. To that end, Sodexo was one of the first contract food service companies to partner with Food Alliance. This non-profit organization promotes sustainable agriculture by recognizing and rewarding farmers who produce food in environmentally friendly and socially responsible ways. Together, Sodexo and Food Alliance take responsibility for educating our customers and others in the food system about the benefits of sustainable agriculture.
Every day, we make choices in the food we buy and the food we eat. This directly impacts our lives- not just what we eat, but the water we drink, the air we breathe and the health of our communities. Our Food Alliance guiding principles are:
- Protecting and conserving water resources
- Protecting and enhancing soil resources
- Conserving and recycling nutrients
- Reducing the environmental and health impacts of pesticides by practicing Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
- Conserving and enhancing wildlife habitat
- Providing safe and fair working conditions for our employees and our families
- Producing Food Alliance certified crops without the use of genetically modified organisms (GMO's)
- Provide healthy and humane care for livestock
- Continually improving farming/ranching practices
Sustainable Initiatives:
- Recylcing on campus – all soda and juice bottles as well as office paper, ink cartridges, cardboard, aluminum and used fryer oil
- Local foods - SInce 2006, Keystone College Dining Services and Sodexo have been making a
concentrated effort to purchase locally grown and produced foods. With this effort, we have defined ‘local’ as a 100 mile radius from the Keystone College campus. We are purchasing much of the produce from farms in New York and Pennsylvania.
- Organic – we offer over 25 organic items on a consistent basis. Our retail operation provides the following organic items: beverages, yogurts and smoothies, snacks, frozen entrees, nutritional bars and produce.
- Fair Trade – Jazzman’s coffee in the Giant’s Grill has a wide variety of Fair Trade coffees. Green Mountain coffee is also available in resident dining
- Campus ties – Keystone College Dining Services works hand-in-hand with Keystone College to
develop sustainable practices. Dining Services was key in forming a Sustainable
Committee on campus to develop sustainable goals campus-wide. Keystone Facilities and the Keystone Culinary Program have joined the committee as of June, 2007.
- New Ecolab Apex Green Cleaning Products
- Reusable mugs - Look for recycle mugs in the Food Court. They will be sold at a discount and encourage the use of a recycled mug. Or use your own mug to help reduce waste!
- Trayless dining! When plates are used without trays...waste is decreased by 1oz per plate! Water and detergent use is also decreased.
